Equipped with lab coats, beakers, safety goggles, and a wonderful sense of curiosity, fifth graders set off to investigate matter with some hands on learning.
The fifth grade class had the opportunity to go to the Greenbush Learning Center to investigate matter. While at the center, students refreshed their previous experiences with the subject. In addition, students were able to do several scientific investigations. These included: making slime, making foam, classifying objects by different characteristics, and observing how different materials can affect the speed at which ice melts.

The American Revolutionary War has a large number of battles.
In order to help students keep the battles straight, an interactive bulletin board was created to help them study all of the battles that occurred within the revolution--and who won. If students are unsure of when the battle occurred, they have only to look to the left, to a timeline on the same bulletin board. As Hail to the Chief played, our Presidents came out to walk the perimeter of the crowd who had gathered to hear them speak about themselves. Dressed to the nines, with secret service agents to complete the ensemble, the fifth grade gave the crowd an experience that was not only entertaining, but very educational.
Time for some Friday fun.
Students were given this prompt, and wrote their response on a sticky note. The notes were shared by Mrs. V. with the rest of the class, anonymously. Everyone in the fifth grade family was excited for the weekend, and ready to finish the week strong after this activity. Fifth grade students had another hands-on day in Science. After learning about fossils, weathering, erosion, and deposition, students had to chance to look at and handle some real fossils. Students had the opportunity to examine a shark tooth, mammoth bone, petrified wood, and trilobites.
Students had the opportunity to create mobiles to hang above their desks in anticipation of March Madness.
Server training has begun for the fifth grade class! Students will take over serving full time during the summer, but will begin serving along with sixth graders next week for the remainder of the school year.
Students now have the option of using the standing desks that were donated through the Wish Tree. Each week, two students will be given the option to use the standing desks any time they have free time to work.
Science class is always much anticipated in the fifth grade classroom.
This specific unit gives students a chance to breakdown how the world works and to do hands on activities. This week, we have been learning about the different layers of the Earth and the Earth's systems. After learning the basic "book" information regarding the layers of the Earth, we began to do our exploration of how tectonic plates work, and how they help to shape the world. In order to demonstrate this, the students used graham crackers to create mountains, volcanoes, trenches, and to cause earthquakes. |
